Instruction and Grading

Instruction

The teachers of Vashon Island School District utilize the Marzano Instructional Framework and Universal Design for Learning (UDL).  Both aim to improve teaching effectiveness and student learning, but they do so through complementary approaches. UDL supports the Marzano Framework by enhancing accessibility, engagement, and individualized support across the framework’s domains.

Grading Practices

VISD uses a 5-point scale: 0 through 4, with 0 representing “no evidence” and 4 representing “exceeds grade-level standard.”

This assessment practice aligns better with our district’s mission and objectives. It provides for additional feedback and communication about how well a student is learning in the classroom in relationship to identified priority standards. Parents and students will see areas of academic strength and weaknesses based on these priority standards. Teachers will know more clearly which standards they need to re-teach or extend. Students will know which standards they need additional learning opportunities and/or practice.
