Message from VISD Board of Directors regarding superintendent search

Posted Date: 12/05/25 (04:00 PM)

The Vashon Island School District Board of Directors wishes to share an important update regarding our superintendent search process. After thoughtful consideration, the Board has decided to suspend the search at this time and resume the full process with our search firm, HYA, in the fall of 2026. This decision allows us to provide critical continuity as we launch vital initiatives impacting the vibrancy and sustainability of our schools.

We are pleased to share that Interim Superintendent Dr. Jo Moccia is willing to continue to serve in her role throughout this period. We anticipate extending her contract, contingent upon a board vote at the December 11th board meeting. Her exceptional leadership, deep commitment to our students and staff, and strong partnerships with families and the community ensure that our district remains on a positive path forward.

In just a few short months, Dr. Moccia has put into place systems, structures, and practices addressing lingering challenges and positioned us for moving forward in ways sustainable, visionary, and innovative. It is vital that Dr. Moccia has the time and support to launch and to solidify the foundation for the success of current initiatives, from the proposed bond, the development of a ten-year facilities plan, the migration to a new operating system, to the leadership needed to navigate potential budget constraints in the upcoming legislative session. The continual turmoil resulting from rapid shifts at the federal level requires an ability to navigate in ways strategic, proactive, and visionary. We are exceedingly fortunate to anticipate Moccia at the helm.

We appreciate the continued support, engagement, and trust of the Vashon Island community as we work together to ensure the very best for our students. Further updates will be shared as we prepare for the relaunch of the search in the fall.
