Announcing Interim Superintendent Dr. Josephine (Jo) Moccia

Dear VISD Community,


I’m writing with some great news. The Vashon Island School Board has reached a preliminary agreement with an Interim Superintendent, Dr. Josephine (Jo) Moccia. We are thrilled that Dr. Moccia has accepted our offer. The Board will vote on her contract at our next meeting, Thursday June 12, 2025. Pending Board approval, she will officially start July 1, though she plans to visit the district to ease the transition sometime in mid-June.


Dr. Moccia is a confident, highly capable, and experienced leader. She is retiring from 14 years as Superintendent of the South Whidbey School District, a community not unlike our own in terms of size, number of schools, and demographics. Previous to South Whidbey, she held several leadership roles in the Averill Park (NY) District including Superintendent, Asst. Superintendent, Principal, and Director of Special Education.

She will provide the district steady leadership and oversight immediately following Dr. McSheehy’s transition to Bremerton. We are so grateful she is “all in” for the Vashon Island School District.
