• Developmental Screening for Children Birth to Age Five

Early intervention is critical to supporting the growth of young children who are experiencing developmental delays or disabilities. Vashon Island School District has several resources aimed at providing screening, evaluation, and developmental supports when a parent or caregiver has concerns about their child's development.

    ChildStrive
ChildStrive is an organization which provides Developmental Screening and Evaluation for children on Vashon ages 0-3 when the child's parent or caregiver has a concern about the child's development. If a child is showing a developmental delay or disability and they are found eligible for services, Child Strive provides early support services including Speech Therapy, Occupational Therapy, Physical Therapy, and Special Educator services.  The team of providers includes a Family Resource Coordinator, Physical therapist, Occupational therapist, Speech and Language Pathologist, and Educator. The team provides developmental assessments free of charge in the home.

To make a referral for a developmental screening, you may contact ChildStrive at 425.245.8377 or email info@childstrive.org. You can also see the ChildStrive website here.

Developmental Concerns Ages 3 years to 5 years

The Vashon School District provides free developmental screening for children ages 3 years to 5 years in the areas of communication, fine and gross motor, social/emotional and cognitive and adaptive skills.  During the screening process, our team may suggest that your child should come back for a more in-depth developmental evaluation to take a closer look at the areas of developmental concern and see if your child would benefit from educational support or therapy from the school district. An evaluation usually consists of an hour-long visit with members of our school team who understand different areas of child development. We will ask you questions and observe and play with your child. Children usually enjoy their time in our preschool classroom during the developmental evaluation.

The Vashon Island School District offers several different services to children who are found eligible for services because they demonstrate developmental delays that are significant enough that they would benefit from therapy (speech, occupational, physical therapy or behavioral supports) and/or developmental preschool.
