March 30, 2026
The Vashon Island School District Bond Planning Task Force, a committee made up of district staff and Vashon Island residents convened for its first meeting to begin discussion about school facility priorities and the potential development of a future bond proposal for Vashon voters.
Introductions
The meeting opened with a land acknowledgement and introductions, allowing committee members to become acquainted and begin building a shared understanding of the task ahead. Rebecca Baibeck of Integrus Architecture provided an overview of the committee’s role in the planning process and provided a history of VISD’s previous levy and bond measures. Interim Superintendent Dr. Jo Moccia noted the emphasis on centering the work on the district’s Vashon Promise. “Our goal is to make the spaces meet the needs we actually have,” said Dr. Moccia.
Introducing the Long Range Facilities Master Plan
The committee referred back to the recently completed Long Range Facilities Master Plan, noting that the projects being considered will reside in six thematic buckets:
- Safety and Security Upgrades
- System Upgrades
- Targeted Improvements
- Major Modernization Addition or Expansion
- Community Partnerships
- Enrollment Efficiencies
Small Group Activity
The committee broke into small groups and looked at different scenarios for potential bond projects that mixed and matched projects from various containers. The groups then explained their choices and the committee engaged in discussions around the various results. Participants discussed trade-offs between priorities, including the potential construction of new buildings and upgrades to existing facilities.
Coming Next
The committee will continue reviewing facility needs and evaluating potential project scenarios in upcoming meetings. The next meeting will focus on school funding, tax impacts, and potential state funding sources.
