About VHS

  • VHS' goal is to help students become more purposeful, active learners who are aware of the importance of their academic and vocational goals. We continually strive to cause students to have a clear sense of direction about their future goals and how to achieve them.

    Who Are We?

The VHS staff demonstrates exceptional academic preparation: The majority possessing masters degrees and some doctorates. There is strong dedication to helping each student succeed as well as a commitment to academic excellence. High academic standards and excellence in instruction was recognized by the Federal Department of Education in 2008. Vashon Island High School was one of the 320 schools nation wide to be named a Federal No Child Left Behind Blue Ribbon School. That same year Washington State's Superintendent of Public instruction named Vashon Island High School a School of Distinction. These high academic standards are further evidenced by the high percentage of VHS students who enroll and maintain strong grades in four year universities. Our students maintain the highest GPA while attending the U of W (5-year study comparing Washington State High Schools.)

Vashon Island High School (VHS) is a four-year, fully accredited public high school with a student population of 518 and a staff of 44. Our island location has contributed to our students’ sense of individualism and uniqueness. Our community offers exceptional support. There are active arts advisory boards, a sports booster club, a community scholarship foundation, as well as corporate contributions to our programs.

Our student population is divided fairly evenly between grades 9 through 12. While our student body reflects limited cultural diversity, there is economic diversity. Thirteen percent of the student body qualifies for free or reduced price lunches. Six percent of our students receive special services and support.

Vashon High School offers a full range of college preparatory courses in foreign languages, math, science, and English with a number of vocational offerings in the areas of technology, health, ironworking, jewelry design, criminal justice, maritime studies and culinary arts. Our fine arts program offers courses in 2D and 3D art, percussion band and theatre arts. VHS has a sister school in Himeji , Japan. We exchange visits between Himeji Minami High School and Vashon every other year. Each year we also host exchange students through A.F.S. and Rotary.
