Welcome to the Vashon Island Food Services Program!
The Vashon Island School District distinguishes itself by offering a predominately ‘made-from-scratch’ (breakfast and lunch) menu to students and staff at our elementary, middle, and high school.
Over the last several years, we have made it a priority to connect students to our local food system through procurement of locally-grown produce whenever possible. We are thrilled that our partnerships with local, on-island farms and producers allows us to serve sustainable and delicious vegetables grown within several miles of our schools!
Because we are a mostly made-from-scratch program, our kitchen is a bustling and dynamic space where we take immense care and caution to ensure our meals exceed all nutritional, caloric, quality, and safety standards. Our menu items are often composed of many ingredients that we process and prepare on-site, daily -- which can make managing allergens a uniquely challenging, yet vital, part of our effort to be an inclusive and welcoming space to all.
To request a dietary accommodation for your student, a recognized medical authority must complete a Request for Special Dietary Accommodation Form, which must:
- be medically necessary;
- be signed by a state recognized medical authority;
- indicate foods to be omitted/avoided from the student's diet;
- describe how ingestion of the food impacts the student; and
- specifies the food(s) to be substituted/served instead.

2025-26 School Year Meal Prices
- Breakfast: $3.00 (VHS/McM), Free (CES)
- Lunch: $4.75 (VHS), $4.50 (McM), Free (CES)
- Non-student Adult Breakfast: $3.50
- Non-student Adult Lunch: $7.00
All students who qualify for Free and Reduced receive breakfast and lunch at no cost.
How to Make Payments on Your Food Services Account
Payments/deposits can be made on your student's meal account with a credit/debit card online through Skyward Family and Student Access. A small fee applies.
Payments/deposits can also be dropped off at school offices or mailed to VISD, P.O. Box 547, Vashon, WA 98070.
Donations
All donations to the Food Services Program are used to help zero out negative balances on families who face unexpected financial changes or hardships throughout the school year.
Free and Reduced Information
VISD schools send school meal applications home at the beginning of each school year. However, you may apply for school meals at any time throughout the school year by submitting a household application to your school. Your school will provide you with an application upon request.
If you are earning at or below current Income Eligibility Guidelines, we encourage you to contact your school to fill out a school meal application. The school or local education agency will process your application and issue an eligibility determination. If you think your family may qualify free-and-reduced-price meals, please fill out and return the free and reduced application and the consent to share forms below.
If you are eligible for unemployment compensation, you might also be eligible for free or reduced price school meals and can submit an application to your school.
If you are receiving Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program (SNAP) benefits, your child automatically qualifies for free school meals.

Please note: ALL Chautauqua Elementary Schools students will receive free breakfast and lunch through the 2027-28 school year, regardless of family income.

Wellness and Smart Snack Standards
Smart Snack Nutrition Standards
The Healthy Hunger-Free Kids Act of 2010 required rules that affect “competitive foods” sold in schools. These snacks and beverages, purchased outside of the regular USDA reimbursable meals, “compete” nutritionally with regulated school meals.
Who do the Smart Snack Nutrition Standards apply to?
- All grade levels and school sites
- All areas of each school’s property, under the jurisdiction of the school, that are accessible to students. The rules are in effect from midnight, until 30 minutes after school dismissal.
- All foods sold, regardless of program, fund, or activity, including USDA a la carte programs, vending machines, student stores, culinary arts, PTA, ASB, periodic fund raisers and special events
- There are no waivers or exceptions for fund raisers in Washington State
Who do the Smart Snack Nutrition Standards not apply to?
- Activities and fundraisers held 30 minutes after school is dismissed through midnight.
- Events held off school property
- Food given away free of charge
District Wellness
As directed by the VISD Policy 6700, the Wellness Committee meets annually and is open to district staff and community members.
The District Wellness Committee membership includes parents/guardians; students; representatives of the school nutrition program; representatives of health care, social services, and physical education; school administrators, school board representative; health professionals; and the general public.
The Wellness Committee reviews the Vashon Island School District Board Policy and compliance every three years.

Procedure for Handling Complaints of Discrimination
In accordance with Federal civil rights law and U.S. Department of Agriculture (USDA) civil rights regulations and policies, the USDA, its Agencies, offices, and employees, and institutions participating in or administering USDA programs are prohibited from discriminating based on race, color, national origin, sex, disability, age, or reprisal or retaliation for prior civil rights activity in any program or activity conducted or funded by USDA.
