Dear Families,

First Grade! I hope that you are all looking forward to it as much as I am! I’ve been creating some fun plans with the other First Grade Teachers, Holly and Siri, in preparation for this year’s First Grade journey. Since I am new to Vashon and the Chautauqua Elementary Community, I would like to introduce myself.

I am the proud mother of two young men who are now in their mid-twenties. Time flies! I began teaching when my youngest son entered First Grade. During these past 18 years, I have had the pleasure of teaching young people in the First through the Eighth Grades. First Grade holds so many fun discoveries, and nothing is more amazing than the marvel of children learning to read. During the upcoming year, we will focus on gaining confidence in new skills and developing new friendships through fun, collaborative efforts. I look forward to nurturing a love of learning and helping the children pursue their interests.

Before becoming a classroom teacher, I worked in the fields of both wildlife biology and environmental education. My adventures as a biologist included tracking wolves in Montana and studying chimpanzees and monkeys in an African rainforest. Following my graduate studies in Conservation Biology and Sustainable Development, I became a consultant providing environmental education programs for children, educators and community members. My work leading interpretive programs for children and families in park settings, and conducting outdoor investigations in wetlands, forests and gardens with school children, eventually led to my interest in becoming a classroom teacher.

I have a passion for gardening and taking walks in the forest, especially if accompanied by children. Every class I have ever taught has spent time outdoors connecting academic studies to our local environment and gaining a sense of place. I look forward to providing opportunities for this year’s First Grade to learn by interacting with nature.

See you all soon. I wish your family a relaxing remainder to the summer. I look forward to meeting you and your child soon.

Sincerely,

Jill Reifschneider
