Degrees and Certifications:
Ms. Amy Beth Holmes
Although I grew up in the Midwest, and attended undergraduate college in Iowa, I found my home out here in the Pacific Northwest. I completed my student teaching at Vashon High School in 1999, always had a feeling I would be back. After completing my Masters in Educations at UW, marrying a Vashon Island native, and having two children, we all returned to the island in 2008. Since then our family has been commercially farming on Burton Hill, while I have been working my way back into the classroom.
I am so excited every day to be here at McMurray. I have so much fun sharing my love of science and figuring out how things work alongside students. As a parent of two teenagers, I really appreciate the trust and support families place in us as teachers and as an entire school community.
First Semester 7th graders work together to develop an understanding of science, engineering, and physics. We work to develop skills in:
- How to practice science
- What makes the engineering cycle unique
- How to build, test, and modify structures
- Understanding and measuring motion
- Newton's Laws
- Practicing engineering with objects in motion
- 3D Design
We use Google Classroom on a daily basis, for me as a teacher, to assign work and share information. And students are expected to use Google Classroom on a daily basis to check when assignments are due, and often to turn them in directly through the class portal. Parents and Guardians and invited to join the classroom (please email me), and will receive daily updates via email.
There is occasionally homework assigned, and at least one major project (bridge building) will need to be completed at home. We use a standards-based grading system in the class with a scale:
- Emerging and needs to continue working towards proficiency
- Showing basic understanding, and approaching standard
- At standard, demonstrating strong understanding
- Above and beyond, student has done extra work to demonstrate mastery of subject/skill
Families can check student progress both through Google Classroom and Family Access in Skyward.
