Disney requires uniforms, uniforms require ca$h
They can be heard at games, during English classes, and at pep assemblies; they march in every Strawberry Festival parade, and hold concerts. Lately, they’ve been found washing cars, gardening, and moving furniture. This year, the Pirate band is traveling to California, working incredibly hard to get there by raising $1300 per kid.
This February break the band will be marching in the Disneyland Parade.
“It’s very cool to be accepted for it…not everyone makes it,” band director Ken Quehrn said.
The band had to show what they could do by videotaping a march around the school’s track. Disney was pleased with what they saw, but had one issue: uniforms.
Uniforms are something our band is very lax on. The Pirates usually wear black pants and shoes, and either a T-shirt or a sweater with the band logo.
“Normally [other schools] are all very fancy and look very professional. But our school’s really poor; the band’s really poor, [and] people don’t want to pay for new uniforms,” senior band member, Madeline Osborne said.
