New rules imposed for Green Tide’s foul

VHS’s rowdy fans need to be more supportive of their team and less ridiculing of their opponents.

The crowd is energized, screaming, flailing their arms, and causing chaos among the stands as our state-champions dominate the floor. The referee blows his whistle, and indicates the opposing team has charged and fouled. The Green Tide fans all point to the culprit and begin chanting “You, you, you!” This negative form of chant is no occasional thing.
It’s been the talk of the school ever since the first game this season: Principal Susan Hanson pulled aside a few of the Green Tide members and gave a lecture, saying the fans are to support our team, not ridicule our opponents. She said the trouble started last year, when the focus group of the Green Tide switched hands.
Each year, the league votes for the best sportsmanship among the schools, for both players and fans. The Pirates boy’s basketball team was voted to have the best sportsmanship, however the same could not be said for their fans. Cascade Christian, the winner of best fans, had a total of 29 votes. Vashon Island High School had a meager 4 votes.
This is rather embarrassing, as the Green Tide has been one of the more respected and appreciated fan bases since it was first established in the 2004-2005 school year.
It’s not that fans should sit quietly and watch the game; in fact, it’s quite the opposite.
“I would like the opposing team to be hearing impaired when they leave.” Hanson said.
