At first, they both played cello, but Adria thought that cello was a boy’s instrument and soon explored other musical possibilities. At the age of ten, Adria and Claire mastered sight-reading music and began playing music together. Since then, they’ve made a great match because they have grown musically at the same pace.
Last year, Claire and Adria were inspired by a cello band that plays Metalica-like music. Adria said that the band was awesome because she couldn’t quite tell that they were playing cellos, adding an interesting dynamic to the music. When watching movies, Adria and Claire will sometimes hear a song that really grabs their attention. Specifically, when they watched August Rush, they were incredibly inspired by the amazing musical soundscape of the movie’s sound track.
For about five or six years, both Claire and Adria participated in a music camp in which trios and quartets practice a composition and are coached on the music for the week. At the end of the week, they have a performance of the music that they have been practicing.
The twins are very active with other musicians in the community. The Vashon orchestra has been a very informal, energetic group that they have been part of. They also play in the Lavender Festival every year, along with other small groups of musicians. Both Adria and Claire are interested in continuing to play their instruments in college if the opportunity presents itself.
