Magic Flower = from 9 to almost unlimited points, recorded in your journal

1) 3 pts. for describing in your journal structure of the Magic Flower

2) 3 pts. for describing the mechanism that allows the Magic Flower to operate.

3) 3 pts. for each changed state you can illustrate / describe, along with a proceedure describing how to get to that state reliably.

XC Penny Smack Proceedure:

1) Write an hypothesis(testable statement or question) in your journal regarding the potential outcome in terms of heads/tails faceing upwards (visable) after executing the proceedure.

1) 5 pennies (or more, as long as an odd number) standing on edge on a flat surface (table) in random orientation.

2) Smack the table so as to knock the penies down - do NOT use a book, as the wind may alter the results.

3) Cout the number of heads/tails showing (facing upwards from the table) & record in your journal.

4) Relate the results to your hypothesis. If necessary, reformulate your hypothesis & record it in the journal.

5) Repeat steps (1-4) 3 times.

6) Attempt to conclude what are the operant factors (causes / mechanisms) for the results you observe and record. Relate your working hypothesis directly to the observed results. Explain with illustrations (labled drawings) from your microscopic (close) observations.

finger flip demo - see Mr. J. or this mp4 for what you have to demonstrate for 3 pts. Fingers straight, forearms unmoving.

Stomp Rocket Demo = 3 pts. for first trial, 3 more pts. for passing 200 feet = beyond the furthest sidewalk. Use the tube templates to form your "rocket" tube, Add fins / noseconc / payload as you choose. Each iteration must be recorded in your journal, with a rationale for revising your hypothesis. Stomp only laterally (sideways) on the pop bottle - lengthwise just breaks them:P

Whirlygig demo = demo reliably to Mr. J. how to get the propeller spinning rapidly, with rapid startup, then rapid reverse with rapid rotation also. 3pts.

Find the Black Dot = 3pts. for showing Mr.J. the one black dod in a million in the demo jar.

4 Second Whiligig = 3pts.

criterion = 4 seconds in the air, as verified by Mr.J.

constraints =

1) Any whirligig template with the following modifications:

a) Scotch tape one paperclip to the bottom stem with 1/4 # protruding from the bottom, with one rubber band attached.

2) Launch outdoors, away from face and body, upwards, only.

3) Only student permitted appropriate behaviors

4) No massive or pointy objects may be added to the whirligig

Resonant Bar = 3pts.

1) Locate the 30cmx1cm aluminum bar and K2 rosin container on the left side of the LaserDisk player on the shelf directly under the projection laptop.

2) Open the K2 rosin tin by pressing gently on the middle of the lid until you hear a slight click. Remove the lid, pick up rosin dust by pressing your forefinger into the dust, replace the lid, and gently squeeze the sides of the lid until it pops back into place holding the lid to the tin.

3) Hold the resonance bar at the vibratory node / center of mass with one thumb / forefinger, and stroke offset thunb and forefinger of the rosined hand from center to end. Vary your speed and force to get the sound to maximize.

4) Demonstrate to Mr. Justin's satisfaction for credit during free time.

Action Enhanced Whirligig = 6pts.

1) Create & demonstrate a whirligig built to the optimal specifications (slowest speed) in your class using both maximal performance manipulated variables (paperclip # & wing length).

2) Add color designs which are activated / enhanced during spinning descent when viewed from above & to the side.

3) May also try an equal preformance self designed whirligig.

Egg Drop Lander

1) Lowest (eggless) mass lander in which egg survives drop from peak of gym roof to lower parking lot surface for each section wins 9 enrichment project points.

2) 6 enrichment project points to any survivg egg (no leaks), any mass lander.

3) 3 pts. for construction of approved design tested off gym roof.

4) No commercial packing materials (bubble wrap, strofoam, blown foam, cyano or building insulation filler foam, etc.). Mr. J.'s judgement final.

5) No active lifting / bouyance devices / materials - helium, motors, etc. Wings, parachutes AOK. Mr. J.'s judgement final.

6) No alteration of the egg protien - acid treatment, ageing, heat, microwave radiation, etc. Mr. J.'s judgement final.

7) Mr. J. to provide eggs - one per approved design on testing day only.

8) Approved materials = provided poly garbage bag (30gal / 1M), string, tape, glue, staples, dixie cups, small balloons, vinly gloves, paper.
