Operating Principles

We are a team, working towards a common goal, even though we each may take a different path.

We will work in partnership with the community and increase opportunities for two-way communication.

We will support the superintendent's efforts to reach district goals, and will hold the superintendent accountable for doing so.

We will conduct orderly, productive meetings, treating each other, staff and public with respect, even in times of disagreement.

We will be proactive in bringing information related to upcoming decisions to the community in order to solicit feedback and aid in decision-making.

We will define our goals and projected work scope for the year and make them readily available to the community.

We will evaluate ourselves periodically and will provide the opportunity for others to grade the work of the Board.

Mission Statement

Vashon Island Public Schools...
Providing educational resources and opportunities for students to become self-reliant lifelong learners with the knowledge, skills, habits, values and attitudes for living responsible, productive and satisfying lives.

Our educational community has clear expectations for academic excellence. We are committed to providing a quality instructional program with high standards for our staff and students. We seek to enable students to develop their individual potentials. Graduates will be prepared for the challenge of higher education, vocational training or the work place.

Our students will be educated in a core curriculum of academic subjects. Students graduating from the Vashon Island School District will possess knowledge appropriate to their academic and vocational intentions in the interrelated subject areas of social studies, physical sciences, mathematics, language, and the arts.

Using their acquired knowledge, they will exhibit skills in working independently and cooperatively, as critical thinkers and creative problem solvers. They will exhibit effective communication skills; research and study skills; and the application of concepts and principles of mathematics, science, and technology. They will integrate knowledge and experience across traditional academic disciplines, periods in history, and cultures.

Students will be encouraged to develop values and attitudes which promote physical and emotional health, self-confidence, resourcefulness, and responsibility. They will be encouraged to value human dignity and to appreciate cultural diversity. They will exhibit the ability and willingness to initiate and respond to change both in their personal lives and as citizens in their world. Students will experience these values and attitudes through our curriculum and in their daily interactions with peers and staff.

We strive to foster an excitement about learning and an understanding of education as a lifelong process. Our instructional program shall reflect current research in education, offering a challenging and enriching learning environment. Our educators will provide a variety of instructional methods to meet the needs of each student. In order for students to reach their full potential, we will hold them accountable to the highest expectations of achievement. Our sense of school community is strong, and we value the participation of each member.

In achieving this mission, we view ourselves as partners with students, parents and the community.
